Shortly after fellow front seven teammate Francisco Mauigoa went to the Jets, another Canes heads to New York
The Miami Hurricanes prospects are starting to fly off the 2025 NFL Draft shelves on Day Three. And for this one, there will be some familiarity as two Canes will report to the same team.
Miami EDGE Defender, Tyler Baron, ships off to the New York Jets, who used their 176th overall pick, the final pick of the fifth round, just 14 picks after his teammate, LB Francisco Mauigoa, went 162nd to the same destination.
Baron, similar to Mauigoa, was a transfer to Miami. Baron shined at Tennessee over four seasons where he compiled 101 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, and also had a scoop-and-score. Prior to playing for the Volunteers, Baron was a four-star recruit and the fourth-ranked defensive end in the 2020 recruiting class, after attending Knoxville Catholic High in Tennessee, where he also played basketball and track.
In his lone season at Miami, Baron was firing out of the gates in his lone season for the Canes (three sacks in an early season game against FAMU) but seemed to fade slightly as the season progressed. He put together 5.5 sacks total, 11 tackles for loss, and 38 tackles.
That said, Baron put together a strong campaign in leading Miami in tackles for loss and sacks, which will lead to a draft-worthy grade. Baron relies on his freakish athleticism and he should get a crack to rotate in on defenses at the next level. If he elevates in pass-rush skill and run defense, he could serve as a nice piece.
Congrats to Tyler, and best of luck in the Big Apple with Kiko!
