Well, that was fun, once again. With less of a cardiac issue this time around.
The Miami Hurricanes blew the doors off of 4 seed Columbia on Saturday night 14-1 to reach the Hattiesburg regional final.
Griffin Hugus was Huge-us for the Canes on the bump, going the distance on 122 pitches with 1 ER allowed with 9 strikeouts. A masterful effort. At the plate, Daniel Cuvet was his usual awesome self, going 2-2 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. However, the hero of the night was Dorian Gonazlez, Jr, who smacked two home runs, including a grand slam, with 8 RBIs.
Miami took control of the game quickly, going up 4-0 in the first on the strength of Cuvet sneaking a ball inside the third base bag to plate the first two runs. Gonzalez brought Cuvet home on a single and then scored on a wild pitch that got way away from the plate.
Columbia got on the board with a solo shot to left center in the fourth, but Miami slammed the door shut in the bottom of the inning. After a Max Galvin RBI double, Gonzalez slugged one out to right, and Miami was totally in control at 8-1. They’d add on more in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, with the big blow coming on the Gonzalez grand slam in the 7th.
Miami now waits to see who wins between Columbia and Southern Miss to reach the regional final. The winner of that game has to beat Miami twice. We’ll see how things shake out tomorrow.
Go Canes!
