I don’t really have the words anymore about Miami Hurricanes baseball under the tutelage of J.D. Arteaga. Other than truly disappointing, as usual.
That theme continued on Tuesday in the ACC tournament. After falling flat in the regular season finale to Notre Dame 12-2 to miss out on a bye, the 9-seed Hurricanes got their doors absolutely blown clean off by the last-place Cal Bears, losing 12-2 in the tourney’s opening game by eighth inning run rule.
Cal opened the scoring in the second with a two-run bomb to right off of Miami starter Griffin Hugus. Two innings later, the Bears would blow the lid right off the game with a 7-run inning to effectively end the game at 9-0. No need to rehash that horse shit.
The only reason this piece isn’t titled: “it’s time to fire J.D. Arteaga right this second” is that the NCAA tournament bracket doesn’t come out until Monday. If they make it and somehow go on a run, then my argument would be at least tempered somewhat.
However, Miami made their case to not be in with an absolute implosion after going on a 10-game conference winning streak to get back in contention. The Canes were a projected 3 seed by 11 on 7 Sports and D1 Baseball and on or near the bubble coming into the ACC tourney, and a loss like this can only hurt their chances.
So, miss a second straight NCAA tournament, and Arteaga’s got to go. Hands down, no questions asked. That’s it, and that’s all. And even if they make it, a swift ass kicking 0-2-and-a-BBQ should have the same end result: a new coach in Coral Gables.
Miami Hurricanes baseball is a brand. It has a legacy. A standard. And it’s time that AD Dan Radakovich recognizes that what this slop is on the field doesn’t meet that standard and doesn’t look like it ever will.
Do your job, Dan. Even if you feel the need to wait for the other shoe to officially drop next week first.
