Miami Basketball Lands Top Transfer From Kansas State

April 24, 2022 by The Spun

The top available player in the transfer portal has announced where he’ll play college basketball next season. Former Kansas State guard Nijel Pack told ESPN that he’s heading to Miami.

Pack had an excellent 2021-22 season, averaging 17.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. He entered the transfer portal after Bruce Weber stepped down as Kansas State’s head coach.

Ohio State and Purdue were in the mix for Pack, but he ultimately chose Miami because he really likes Jim Larrañaga’s system.

“The way Coach L [Larrañaga] allows his players to play with freedom and get up and down the floor with an NBA style offense, I feel like I can thrive in his program, ” Pack told ESPN. “Miami felt like home for me and my family and I look forward to building off last year’s Elite Eight run.”

Pack could’ve went pro this offseason, but he believes playing point guard next season will help his stock for the 2023 draft.

“For me the biggest factor in deciding on a school was the ability to play on the ball and show NBA teams I am a true point guard,” he explained. “I wanted to get an opportunity where I am playing my natural position the majority of the time.”

Miami has to be thrilled with this addition. Pack will give the Hurricanes an elite scorer capable of setting his teammates up for success.

Time will tell if this was the best possible move for Pack’s career.
