Miami Football Has Reportedly Made A Notable Change

May 4, 2022 by The Spun

The Miami football team underwent a complete overhaul this offseason. The Hurricanes parted ways with head coach Manny Diaz and brought in former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal to take over the program.

Usually when a regime change is made, the program’s new leader brings in their own way of doing things. In the case of Miami football, Cristobal seems to have done away with a sideline staple in South Beach.

“>According to Rivals, Miami’s new offensive line coach Alex Mirabal told recruit Francis Mauigoa that the Hurricanes have gotten rid of the iconic turnover chain.

The prop was previously given out to any Miami player that came up with a turnover during a game. The whole team would typically gather around that individual and celebrate on the sidelines as that player donned a massive chain around his neck.

But under Cristobal, the turnover chain will be no more. Here’s what Mirabal reportedly said about that change.

“We got rid of the turnover chains and stuff like that. We’re here to play football,” he said to Mauigoa, per Rivals.

It’s possible that Mirabal is out of the loop, especially since offensive linemen aren’t typically known for forcing many turnovers. However, he’s most likely in close communication with Cristobal and it seems like the new regime wants to shed any connection to the previous era.

Miami is coming off of a 7-5 season that didn’t quite meet expectations. In 2022, Cristobal will do his best to start a much-needed turnaround for the historic program.

Time will tell if the new campaign also means the end of the turnover chain when the season kicks off next fall.
