The game, Miami’s first bowl sine 2021, will be played on December 28th at 2:15pm at Yankee Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Miami has previously played in the Sun Bowl. In 2018, the Canes lost to the Wisconsin Badgers 35-3. Wisconsin absolutely dominated this game from start to finish, and that scoreline tells the story. This was the second consecutive bowl loss to the Badgers, following the 2017 Orange Bowl loss in that matchup between the teams, won by Wisconsin 34-24.
This marks the first time that Mario Cristobal has led his team to a bowl game in his 2 year tenure at Miami. It will be interesting to see what the team that takes the field for this game looks like. Several players, including starting QB Tyler Van Dyke, have already announced their intention to transfer from the program. And several other starters, namely Safeties Kamren Kinchens and James Williams, and DT Leonard Taylor III, have announced their intention to go to the NFL draft. THey could play, but they could also choose to sit out. That’s yet to be known.
Miami’s opponent in this game, Rutgers, started strong at 6-2 before losing their final 4 games of the season. They’re led by a former Miami assistant — former DC Greg Schiano, a New Jersey native in his second turn coaching his alma mater. That will be a storyline for sure, as Cristobal and Schiano’s times in Miami overlapped some.
And, this is an old Big East matchup from the when the teams shared space in that conference. Miami is a perfect 11-0 against Rutgers in games between these schools, and the Canes will look to keep that perfect streak rolling with a win in the bowl game on December 28th.
According to our friends at DraftKings Sportsbook…..nothing. Nothing at all. Since New Jersey has weird gambling laws, and Rutgers is the State University of New Jersey, DKSB has released lines and over/unders for all bowl games….. *OTHER THAN* Miami vs Rutgers. IDK, maybe that’ll change, but at present, they haven’t released any line information for this game.
So mark your calendars and make your travel plans (if that interests you). Even though it will be from home (no, I’m not going to this game), I’ll surely be watching and rooting for the Canes to put on a good show, get a season-ending win, and ride the momentum forward to 2024 and beyond.
Let’s go win a bowl game, you guys!
Go Canes
