The 2001 Miami Hurricanes Could Have Played In The NFL

When you’re talking the greatest college football teams ever assembled, the 2001 Miami Hurricanes have to be near the top.

Sitting down with Barstool’s Eric Sollenberger, former Canes tight end and NFL sportscaster Greg Olsen outlined why he believes they’re the best. Saying, that team could’ve “100%” been a National Football League team.

They’re not going to win the Super Bowl, but they’d be more competitive than some of the bottom teams that we see year in and year out. There’s no [question]. There is no comparison in my mind, that 2000-01 Miami team that beat Nebraska… that’s the best college football team of all time.

To put it into further perspective, Olsen rattled off some names from that team that barely got on the field.

This is the best way to run it down: Sean Taylor and Antrel Rolle and Kellen Winslow [Jr.] were running down on kickoff … Because they weren’t good enough. Willis McGahee was moved to backup fullback because he was third-string tailback behind Frank Gore and Clinton Portis. … Andre Johnson, Jeremy Shockey, Bryant McKinnie, [Ken] Dorsey, [Jonathan] Vilma, D.J. Williams, Vince Wilfork… I mean, you could go on. It’s ridiculous.

The ’01 Miami team finished a perfect 12-0 and even if you took away all 50 touchdowns the offense scored that year, they still would’ve had an 8-4 record thanks to their dominant defense led by Hall of Famer Ed Reed.
