Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer shakes hands with Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden.

In the wake of Bobby Bowden’s death earlier this morning, countless figures from around the college football world have commented on the great impact the legendary head coach had on the game.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer was one of many great coaches to celebrate Bowden’s illustrious life and legacy.

“Today, we lost a legend,” Meyer wrote on Instagram. “Bobby was a great friend and mentor to me, and his impact transcended the coaching profession in so many ways. Sending love to Ann and the entire Bowden family.

“Rest In Peace Coach Bowden.”

Meyer was the head football coach for the Florida Gators from 2005-10. Bowden led the Florida State program for 34 years from 1976-2009 — allowing for five seasons of intrastate battles between the two great coaches. Reaching the tail end of Bowden’s dominant dynasty in Tallahassee, Meyer’s Florida squad posted a perfect 5-0 record against the Seminoles through that period.

Before that, Bowden’s FSU teams dominated the state of Florida and the college football world as a whole, claiming an NCAA record 28 straight bowl game appearances and 11 straight bowl game wins. He also took the team to two national championship victories in 1993 and 1999.

Bowden passed away peacefully with his family by his side early this morning at his Tallahassee home. He was 91 years old.

The all-time great head coach paved the way for coaches like Meyer to succeed in the college game. Now, the first-year NFL head coach will look to carry that knowledge into his rookie season with the Jags.
