3,300-Yard Tight End “Money On Mind” After Contract Year – Could Land With Chiefs, Panthers

January 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

mike gesicki contract year free agent

Former Miami Dolphin tight end Mike Gesicki is thinking of money after his contract year so he may consider this as a free agent. According to reports, it seems like Gesicki won’t be waiting around for a new deal as he will enter the free-agent market after spending just one season with the Bengals exceeding expectations, recording 57 catches for 597 yards and two touchdowns. He’s been impactful every time he went on the field with quarterback Joe Burrow despite appearing in just 44% of the Bengals’ total offensive snaps. With that, he earned himself an incentive with his first catch in the last regular season game with the Bengals while attempting to punch their ticket into the postseason before falling out of the race.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product began his career with the Dolphins before becoming a journeyman the past two seasons. Despite catching a crucial touchdown in the wild-card matchup against the Bills as a Dolphin in 2022, it was not enough for Miami since they didn’t have money to spend. The Bengals are now floating in the same boat as they head into the offseason with a lot of question marks regarding the future of their pass catchers such as Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase. This makes it impossible for the Bengals to bring back Gesicki even though he made a few crucial catches to keep the team competitive.

However, it shouldn’t be long before a roster is willing to dish out a huge contract but Gesicki might be generous about his contract expectations if it means playing with a contender. Gesicki might need to be open to all options but avoid joining a roster on a one-year deal if it comes down to it.

Rings Over Money

While the Kansas City Chiefs are heading for possibly a three-peat in this year’s Super Bowl, the future beyond that doesn’t look extraordinary. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will probably be without Marquise Brown and DeAndre Hopkins as both of them will enter the free-agent market looking for a new contract. The chances of them coming back are slim while tight end Travis Kelce could give them some temporary life next season. However, the team could try to sign Mike Gesicki on a two-year deal he can’t turn down considering they have a championship roster.

Kelce is aging and his prime days are way behind him so they might have to start thinking about life after him sooner rather than later. All good things must come to an end and Kelce is already teasing he probably retire after this postseason. While Gesicki will never fill the shoes, he could easily be a reliable replacement to be a consistent weapon for Mahomes in pressure situations.

Huge Payday Incoming?

The Carolina Panthers are expecting to go the full extent to find a new pass catcher for third-year quarterback Bryce Young. Before that, the team attempted to salvage Young’s career, adding Diontae Johnson and drafting Jonathan Mingo but both of them are not on the team anymore. Meanwhile, first-round Xavier Legette and undrafted free agent Jalen Coker are both promising playmakers, it shouldn’t stop the Panthers from adding new weapons for Young. If Dave Canales truly believes in Young, he should add Mike Gesicki while they may lose Tommy Tremble this free agency.
