4-Time Pro Bowler Gives Preferred Free Agent Destination

March 29, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Dalvin Cook Free Agent

Running back Dalvin Cook became a free agent after a season to forget in 2023. Following an unceremonious release from the Minnesota Vikings, the running back signed with the New York Jets to try and help Aaron Rodgers’ new team make the playoffs for the first time in over a decade while providing some support for the injured Breece Hall. That plan blew up after four snaps, as Rodgers tore his Achilles and Hall hit the ground running. New York eventually released Cook, allowing the running back to sign with the Baltimore Ravens as they pursued a Super Bowl. Ultimately, Cook finished the year with just 214 rushing yards on 64 attempts.

Now entering his age-29 season, it doesn’t appear as though Dalvin Cook is generating much interest as a free agent. However, while he had a rough 2023, it’s important to remember that he’s just one year removed from a 1,100-yard rushing season. The former second-round pick made the Pro Bowl every year from 2019 to 2022 and, if nothing else, could be a valuable backup for the right organization.

Dalvin Cook might want to compete for a starting job, and the free agent might get that opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the running back is interested in joining America’s Team.

Dalvin Cook Could Sign With Dallas Cowboys As A Free Agent

Dalvin Cook isn’t the player he once was, but he might be the best free agent option for the Dallas Cowboys. After losing Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans, the reigning NFC East champions do not have an answer at running back. If the season started today, the team would have Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn as their top two running backs. This would likely be the worst duo in the league, and while running back isn’t the most important position in the game, you need somebody capable of handling a high workload.

The Baltimore Ravens could try to bring Dalvin Cook back as a free agent, but he wouldn’t be anything more than a backup. The team splurged on superstar Derrick Henry and they also have a promising youngster in Keaton Mitchell. Chances are, Cook is going to look for a place with an opportunity for a larger workload. While Dallas is the most likely fit, these other teams could also pursue him.

Other Possible Fits

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Rachaad White had a phenomenal season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he’s not the type of player who should receive over 300 touches per season. The human body can only take so much, and White will have a tough time surviving his rookie contract with this type of workload. Dalvin Cook is a perfect free agent to lighten his workload, as he’s capable of taking some early-down rushes and freeing up White to see the field in clear passing situations.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers believe Gus Edwards can be their three-down workhorse, but they should bring in a backup in case the 29-year-old running back starts showing his age. Dalvin Cook should come cheap, and the free agent won’t prevent Los Angeles from drafting someone like Blake Corum in the third round.

Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins were linked to Dalvin Cook when he was a free agent last year. While they ended up going with De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert, they should still be interested in adding the four-time Pro Bowler as a backup. Mostert had a long injury history, and Achane struggled to stay on the field as a rookie. Cook can help relieve the workload for both players and hopefully help keep this team healthy down the stretch.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are forced to keep Miles Sanders on their roster. However, they don’t have to play him. Sanders was an outright disaster during his first year with the team, and just about anyone would be an upgrade. The present-day version of Dalvin Cook isn’t going to create too many explosive plays, but at least the free agent can follow a block and catch passes thrown in his direction.
