After re-signing defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah before the NFL’s legal tampering period began, the Miami Dolphins made some of the first big news of the period by agreeing to a deal with former Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds.
However, as we know, deals can’t be finalized until the start of the league year, which this year is March 16 at 4 p.m. ET.
According to Over the Cap, Edmonds’ deal with the Dolphins is expected to be for $12.6 million over two seasons, with $6.1 million guaranteed and $4.1 million in the form of a signing bonus.
This means that, in 2022, Edmonds will receive $2 million in base salary, which is all guaranteed, and $2.05 million for a bonus, bringing his cap hit to $4.05 million. Then, in 2023, his salary jumps to $5.66 million, but none of it is guaranteed. He also has a $340,000 per game roster bonus in 2023, but if the Dolphins wanted to move on from Edmonds after the first season, they would just have the $2.05 million in dead money.
Edmonds also has $500,000 available in bonuses from the Pro Bowl.
This contract will obviously keep him here for 2022, but the structure allows them to cut bait rather easily. That may mean that Miami is looking at more options in free agency or the draft that have the possibility of taking over the lead spot in the backfield.
