Colin Cowherd isn’t a fan of Tua Tagovailoa’s body transformation.
The Miami Dolphins quarterback showed up to offseason activities looking leaner. While he didn’t specify how much weight he lost, Tagovailoa said he’s cut down on sugar.
Tagovailoa said he feels “better” and “more nimble,” but Cowherd expressed concerns about the “noticeably thin” franchise signal-caller.
“He’s listed at 225 and he looked to be about 200 pounds. And this is a pocket quarterback,” Cowherd said on Monday’s show. “It is a little alarming. He looked really, really thin.”
The Fox Sports pundit mentioned John Elway and Ben Roethlisberger when arguing that there’s “never been a great skinny quarterback in league history.” While he later noted that he can understand Lamar Jackson’s weight loss because of how much the MVP runs, he doesn’t think the lighter physique will benefit Tagovailoa on the gridiron.
“I like my quarterbacks like my furniture – big and hard to move. … Tua is not a hyper-athletic quarterback who wants to get faster,” Cowherd continued. “He’s not really that mobile. He’s not big. He doesn’t have a power arm.”
Cowherd claimed the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Philip Rivers had the “perfect quarterback body.” He wants a passer who “can play hurt,” suggesting that Joe Burrow’s 215-pound frame has attributed to his injuries.
Along with not understanding why Tagovailoa decided to slim down, he wondered if anyone within the organization questioned the weight loss.
“I cannot believe there wasn’t at least one Miami Dolphin that said upstairs, ‘Wow, he looks thin,'” he stated. “He’s already small. He’s already got an average arm. I don’t know, it’s something.”
