Most NFL coaches would kick a player out of practice if he showed up under the influence. Well, except for Dan Campbell.
On Thursday the Detroit Lions head coach told a story about one of the players he coached in Miami.
Campbell explained how this player would show up to practice “reeking of alcohol.” He never got sent home, though. Why? Because he loved football and worked hard in practice.
Apparently if a guy can still play well, despite reeking of alcohol, coaches will keep him around.
“Some of these guys, I remember I had a guy in Miami, god he love ball. He was a dynamic football player, but he came in everyday just reeking of alcohol. He was probably on a bender for who knows how long, but god he loved football,” Campbell explained.
“He showed up, he didn’t have any MAs [missed assignments], he hustled non-stop, and it’s like, you know what? You’ll find a way to make that guy work. Not saying we want those guys, but he loved ball, and he had success, and he’s still playing today, but the way.”

It’s pretty cool that Dan Campbell didn’t give up on the player simply because he reeked of alcohol. A lot of coaches would.
It’d be interesting to hear how that player is doing today.
