Dolphins Bring in New Signal Caller Amidst Tua Injury

September 17, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Tyler Huntley

Week 2 was a whirlwind for the Miami Dolphins. They had a quick turnaround from their Week 1 victory against Jacksonville to a Thursday night showdown against the Buffalo Bills. A game in which everything that could go wrong did for Miami. The biggest issue came late in the third quarter when Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was injured when he suffered a concussion on a scramble for a first down. It’s been reported that the Dolphins signal caller said he has, “no plans to retire” but Miami was in the market for depth behind interim starter Skyler Thompson. News broke Monday that Miami signed Tyler Huntley off the Ravens practice squad.

Tyler “Snoop” Huntley

Huntley slots in behind Thompson but will push for starting reps as he becomes more familiar with Miami’s system. Huntley’s played in nine career regular season games and two playoff games, one as a starter and the other in spot duty. He’s amassed a 3-6 regular season record, but flashed his dual threat ability every time he’s played.

The former Raven has thrown for almost 2,ooo yards and eight td’s, and added another three on the ground. He first caught the attention of Ravens fans with a five td performance in a preseason game against Washington in 2021. He then had a huge four td performance against the Packers that same season. Huntley spearheaded a comeback performance that ultimately fell short when the Ravens elected to go for two to win the game instead of tying it up with an extra point.

“Snoop” performed well in his first playoff start, but is best remembered for an unfortunate goal-line fumble that swung the game Cincinnati’s favor.

Potential Impact

Huntley joins a roster full of speed and talented playmakers on offense. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Devon Achane, and Raheem Mostert are all threats to score any time they touch the ball. If Huntley see’s playing time, he’s a new threat defenses have to deal with.

Despite the success Miami’s offense has seen under head coach Mike McDaniel, the threat of rushing yards from the QB position hasn’t been one of them. Run-pass options are a large part of what the Dolphins do on offense, but having receivers run downfield routes during them is something few outside of Miami utilize very often. It’s an added stressor for defenses. A passer that presents a threat to run that defenses have to respect may open up Miami’s offense in a whole new way until Tagovailoa returns.

Thompson is currently the starter, and the hope in Miami is that he’ll hit the ground running. But he certainly won’t have much runway to keep things moving in a positive direction.

Miami has a roster that is expected to take another step this season. Huntley’s success in limited action with Baltimore include leading them to the playoffs in the 22-23 season, as well as a Pro Bowl appearance where he scored four td’s. Those achievements coupled with the exciting play style that accompanies a mobile Qb, means fans will be eager to see him in action if Thompson fails to deliver.
