Earlier this week, Miami Dolphins All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard announced he has requested a trade away from the Dolphins franchise.
“In 2018, I signed an extension that I didn’t completely understand, or feel comfortable with,” Howard said in a statement. “I’ve played on that deal for two seasons and didn’t complain, but everyone knows I’ve significantly outperformed that deal.”
Of course, his trade request sent shockwaves through the NFL. However, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores made it clear he’s not too worried about the trade request.
Flores was asked if he thinks there is a way the Dolphins can keep Howard on the team. “There’s a way,” Flores told “The Joe Rose Show” via the Miami Herald.
Here’s more of what he said:
“I think we just continue to have discussions with him, his representation, and keep the lines of communication open, continue having dialogue and, hopefully, work something out.”
Howard is the sixth highest paid corner in the NFL — earning $15.1 million in average salary on his five-year, $75.25 million extension.
Not too long ago, he watched as the Dolphins gave Byron Jones $40 million through the first two seasons of his five-year, $82.5 million deal.
While he’s frustrated, Howard doesn’t control his own destiny. Plenty of teams will be interested in him, but if the Dolphins don’t want to trade the two-time All-Pro, they don’t have to.
