After leading the NFL in interceptions through the 2020 season (10), All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard has publicly requested a trade away from the Miami Dolphins. Heading into the third season of the five-year, $75.25 million contract extension he signed back in 2018, Howard has expressed that he’s “unhappy” with his current deal.
According to the public statement he made on social media Tuesday night, the sixth-year corner and his agent, David Canter, have “brought solutions to the table” on how to rectify these ongoing contract disputes — all of which were refused by the Miami front office.
Recent reports from the Miami Herald have shed more light on the situation. According to Dolphins insider Armando Salguero, the team’s front office have yet to make a counter offer to any of Howard’s proposals.
As one of the top CB options in the league, Howard is frustrated with his current No. 6 position on the list of highest paid NFL cornerbacks. These frustrations were only amplified when his secondary teammate Byron Jones signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal in 2020 — making Howard the second highest paid corner on the Dolphins roster.
The two-time league interception leader believes the Dolphins have disrespected him by not upping a deal that he’s “significantly outperformed.”
“That is why I don’t feel the organization has dealt with me in good faith,” Howard wrote. ” I don’t feel valued, or respected by the Dolphins. Just like they can take a business-first approach, so can I.”
Howard missed yesterday’s training camp practice with an undisclosed injury.
