Dolphins Lock in Long-Term Extension With Star Cornerback

September 7, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Another Pro Bowler is staying in Miami for the long run. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey and the Dolphins agreed on a new three-year, $72.3 million extension deal, according to ESPN Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The deal makes the former Super Bowl champion the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history for the second time in his career. He’ll be paid up to $24.1 million per year.

Ramsey’s Resume

Since 2016, Ramsey created an image of what a consistent lockdown cornerback should be. His rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars was an early glimpse of this as he finished the year with 55 solo tackles and two interceptions- one of them a pick-6- and second in voting for the Defensive Rookie of The Year.

The seven-time Pro-Bowler only missed one start of 118 games played throughout his career. Ramsey’s presence was a large part of the Jaguars’ success between 2016 and 2019. This success includes Jacksonville’s appearance in the AFC Championship game in 2017. The cornerback would be later traded to the Los Angeles Rams and go on to win Super Bowl LVI.

Ramsey was then traded to Miami in 2023 and had an immediate impact. The Florida State alum recorded 18 solo tackles and three interceptions, despite missing the beginning of the season with a knee injury. Throughout nine seasons in the league, Ramsey filed in 393 solo tackles, 22 interceptions and forced six fumbles.

A Busy Extension Summer for Miami

The Dolphins throughout this preseason have been busy in the front office. General manager Chris Grier and company inked a new extension deal for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and followed suit with Pro-Bowl wideout Tyreek Hill. The duo, and first-string running back Raheem Mostert, will be officially on contract with Miami through 2026.

Extensions this summer don’t stop with the players. Head coach Mike McDaniel also earned an extension, which will keep him as the head ball coach with the Dolphins through the 2028 season. Ramsey’s extension continues to create a trend of Miami’s in keeping the playoff roster intact from last season.

Ramsey’s Status Into the Regular Season

Miami throughout training camp has dealt with injuries and older veterans missing practice due to rest. Ramsey is also a victim of this. The 29-year-old missed a few days of camp practice, mostly before joint practice days or games. It has been reported that Ramsey is dealing with a minor hamstring injury.

Ramsey is listed with a hamstring injury for Week 1 against the Jacksonville. The veteran didn’t participate in practice Wednesday but is expected to practice later this afternoon. Ramsey hasn’t been officially ruled out for Sunday yet.

The upcoming season itself for Miami will be a difficult one off the bat. The Dolphins after their season opener against Jacksonville will stay home at Hard Rock Stadium to host the Buffalo Bills for Thursday Night Football at 8:15 p.m. To face back-to-back winning teams from last season within a week is a testament to what Miami could be this year. For Ramsey, it’ll be an opportunity to make an early statement after a historic deal.
