Dolphins officially make roster move to retire Terron Armstead

Armstead announced his retirement in April.

In April, Miami Dolphins left tackle Terron Armstead announced he would be retiring from the NFL. Almost two months later, the Dolphins made that official on Monday, moving Armstead to the reserve/retired list. Waiting until after June 1 allowed the Dolphins to maximize the salary cap relief they received from Armstead’s retirement.

Miami owes about $18 million in salary cap accounting for Armstead. With the delay in processing his retirement, the Dolphins will have around $7.8 million in dead money this year, with another $10.2 million in money owed against the 2026 cap.

Armstead retires after 12 seasons in the NFL, nine with the New Orleans Saints and three in Miami. He was a five time Pro Bowl selection, including being named to the all-star event in his first two seasons with the Dolphins. A lock-down left tackle throughout his career, Armstead’s biggest issue was health, with injuries costing him games in every season he played. He played in 15 games for Miami last year, tying the 2019 season for the most games he played in a single season.

Second-year tackle Patrick Paul is expected to take over the starting left tackle position, stepping in to fill Armstead’s shoes.

The Dolphins now have an open roster space, with no concurrent roster move announced.
