Dolphins Officially Release Journeyman Pro Bowler – Ravens, Panthers Among Top Logical Fits

February 15, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

dolphins release raheem mostert

The Miami Dolphins will officially release journeyman veteran Raheem Mostert this offseason before free agency next month. According to Mostert’s agent, it will give him a chance to be available on the market to join a team elsewhere to chase a Super Bowl ring. Originally selected as an undrafted rookie in 20165, the former Purdue didn’t have a successful tenure in the league after becoming a journeyman for the majority of it, joining teams such as the Eagles, Ravens, Browns and several rosters. However, he had an excellent outing with the Dolphins in 2023 after returning to the team in 2022, recording a career-high 1,012 yards and 18 touchdowns.

It’s clear he has something left in the tank but as he’s aging, Mostert might continue to settle for one-year contracts for the rest of his career in the NFL. Mostert came into the 2024 campaign with an uncertain future either way since De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright have been outperforming so he was falling out of the depth chart either way. Achane was the main starter for the backfield duties in Miami so no one saw much from Mostert this past campaign. As the Dolphins will probably rebuild, it makes sense to stick to a younger Wright as their backup.

Possible Next Teams

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens have one of the best running backs in Derrick Henry after signing him to a two-year deal last offseason. While they will likely extend him to a long-term deal, they should be in the market for a backup running back. Keaton Mitchell got the chance to return but he hasn’t been doing anything to prove he’s a reliable No. 2 behind. To help ensure Henry has fresh legs for the postseason, Baltimore could reunite with Mostert to bolster the backfield while Justice Hill focuses on more of a situational role in screen passes and quick dump-offs.

Carolina Panthers

2024 Draft pick Jonathon Brooks has yet to make his debut and since suffering from another brutal injury, the Panthers should find a new running back to pair with uprising star Chuba Hubbard. Carolina will likely cut an aging Miles Sanders this offseason. While Mostert probably won’t make a huge difference, the Panthers could use him in a temporary role.

New Orleans Saints

After the extension of Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the future for Kendre Miller looks bleak. Meanwhile, Alvin Kamara is still the starter after his new contract, the Saints should acquire Mostert in this year’s free agency. Jamaal Williams didn’t have a stellar 2024 campaign so this season could be his last with the Saints if he isn’t cut by then.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys haven’t found their next promising running back since parting ways with Tony Pollard. They’ve attempted to bring back Ezekiel Elliott but he doesn’t have the same ceiling as he did in the 2016 rookie year. Perhaps, they could sign Mostert on a cheap one-year contract while they will likely embrace to lose Rico Dowdle in this year’s free agency. He won’t start but he could fight for a backup job ahead of guys like Deuce Vaughn.

Washington Commanders

As much success as this offense is having in Washington, the Commanders have a bleak running back department with Bijan Robinson as their starter. Austin Ekeler is a free agent so this means they could be in the market for a new running back this year. Robinson is explosive in certain moments and perhaps, if they sign Mostert, they could give him more breathing room in the backfield.
