Dolphins place several tight ends on reserve/COVID-19 list

August 2, 2021 by Dolphins Wire Leave a Comment

A case of COVID-19 in the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff has cast one of the more productive units from the 2020 season onto its head with the start of padded practices just around the corner. Co-offensive coordinator George Godsey has tested positive for COVID-19 this weekend, which will place him out of commission and set off a series of preventative measures due to contact tracing. Godsey, who is fully vaccinated, will yield offensive coordinator duties to Eric Studesville completely in his absence.

But contact tracing has flagged three members of the Dolphins’ tight end room as potential risks; and the team has acted swiftly to axe a potential spread of the virus through the team. The Dolphins announced yesterday that Mike Gesicki, Adam Shaheen and Cethan Carter were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a preventative measure for the time being.

How long this trio of tight ends will be out of commission depends on how well they clear the hurdles of testing to ensure there are no additional cases spread from Godsey to others in close contact with him over the past several days.

And while it will create a trying dynamic within the Dolphins’ practices, added reps for 2021 3rd-round draft choice Hunter Long is on the table for any tight end who ultimately needs to spend extended time away from the team. Durham Smythe, Chris Myarick, Carson Meier and Long all avoided contact tracing red flags and are presumably good to go for the Dolphins as they enter into Week 2 of 2021 training camp.
