Dolphins Top Cut Candidate Could Head to Chiefs, Ravens

Miami Dolphins top cut candidate Bradley Chubb could head to the Chiefs, Ravens this upcoming offseason. According to a Bleacher Report, the chances of Miami releasing the veteran are high considering the team will save a lot of money if they release him. Originally selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the former NC State product came into the league as one of the better edge rushers, signing a four-year deal with the Denver Broncos. After a trade to the Dolphins, the pass rusher got better but injuries the past two seasons are holding the team back from keeping him on the roster.

The Dolphins will need to get creative with their salary cap situation and releasing him after June 1 would save the team $20.2 million this season. He will only stay on the team if both parties agree to a new contract that helps avoid the dead cap. However, chances are, Chubb might want to head to another roster either way since the Dolphins are not in the best position to win a championship anytime. Many players like Star Receiver Tyreek Hill expressed his desire to leave the team so it makes for both Chubb and Miami to agree on a release.

While the Dolphins find a cheaper reliable replacement, the team will continue to develop 2024 draft pick Chop Robinson and 25-year-old Jaelan Phillips. As long as Chubb can stay healthy, he could excel in a defensive system like the Chiefs, Ravens.

Veteran Insurance Policy

The Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the world but that could all come crashing and burning this upcoming offseason. It will be tricky for them to retain most of their talent since they’re under $30 million in salary cap. While it’s important to have ferocious weapons for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the team may afford to lose DeAndre Hopkins and Marquise Brown as a short-term investment to help alleviate the pressure on the defensive side of the ball. Linebackers Nick Bolton and Josh Uche will become free agents and the reality is that they need at least one of them back.

However, they won’t be able to retain both since they need to figure out how to retain safety Justin Reid. Perhaps, they could sign a veteran as an insurance policy like Bradley Chubb since the defensive unit is getting younger. Defensive Tackle Chris Jones is still effective in getting after the quarterback but for him to make a living hell for opposing quarterbacks, they could use Chubb to create separation in the gaps. He might not be the perfect fixture but it’s extra body if Uche were to come back at least.

Help for Baltimore’s Defense

If anything, the Baltimore Ravens offense did the majority of work to keep the team competitive. After signing Derrick Henry, quarterback Lamar Jackson got increasingly better in the pocket and found an easy target to lay it in the aerial attack. However, despite not finding another reliable receiver after Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman, the Ravens didn’t do much this past offseason to find a superstar edge rusher.

The team can’t afford two inexperienced starters Odafe Oweh and David Ojabo to get this defense off balance. Kyle Van Noy and Roquan Smith are still one of the best in the game but that will only work if they continue to add reliable veterans. Chubb might not have much playoff experience but he has an upside and could be a significant upgrade over Ojabo. He doesn’t need to be a full-time starter but comes in certain situations to blow up coverage.
