Here's some cold water for those Dolphins, Deshaun Watson rumors

Much of the weekend for Miami Dolphins fans was dedicated towards addressing the rumor mill — a star quarterback in Houston is reportedly interested in the Dolphins as a destination should he find his differences with the Texans to be irreconcilable. And any time a player of Deshaun Watson’s caliber becomes available, you’d be wise to at least kick the tires on the situation to gauge if it is a move that would make sense for the team.

But while Deshaun Watson was all the rage for Dolphins fans this weekend, there has yet to be any action on this front from the Dolphins themselves on this front — and we shouldn’t expect there to be any time soon, either. The Dolphins have already begun leaking out such perspective into the football world.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Dolphins has reported that a team source threw some cold water on the Deshaun Watson rumors last night, telling Salguero that “there’s nothing to see here and nothing that has to do with the Miami Dolphins.”

And this comment is factual. The Dolphins have presumably made no contact with the Texans camp about this situation — and nor should they. This offseason is young and the Texans have yet to even hold conversations with Watson themselves, let alone begin discussions with other teams if things appear to be headed off the rails. And from Miami’s perspective, the team just closed a 10-6 season with a rookie quarterback taking the reins for the back half of the year. At the end of season press conference, general manager Chris Grier stated and doubled down that Tua Tagovailoa is the team’s starter.

One external rumor won’t push any dominoes over, nor is it an indication that the Dolphins are interested in pursuing anything here. Due diligence at a later time would certainly be appropriate, but the Dolphins should not be condemned for being attached to this discussion — as they’ve had nothing to do with it at any point in the process. But the fact that Watson would presumably consider Miami a desirable destination is about as flattering of a comment as you can get — so for the time being, Miami ought to take it as such and let this situation develop from afar before deciding if there are any phone calls that deserve to be placed.
