Jaylen Waddle put up no shortage of big numbers in his rookie season. The sixth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft made an immediate impact as a rookie, bringing in 104 catches for over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games.
But according to the former Alabama standout, it’s not good enough. And there’s stat in particular that the 23-year-old said he needs to improve.
Appearing on the “I Am Athlete” podcast hosted by former Pro Bowl receivers Brandon Marshall and Chad Johnson; Jaylen Waddle said he didn’t average nearly enough yards per catch.
“I ain’t going to lie,” Waddle explained. “I think my average was like 9.5 or something like that a catch. I’ve got to show something.”
Waddle’s YPC was actually closer to 10. However, part of the reason is due to the team’s lack of explosive offensive plays last season. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw a lot of underneath passes, hurting that figure a bit. But, Waddle also admitted he needs to do more for his team after the catch when they do throw it short.
“I’ve got to be YAC crazy out there,” Waddle said.
Adding Tyreek Hill to the team should definitely bring more of those big plays to Miami. And with an offensive coach that believes in him, we’ll find out if Tua can put the ball on his lightning-quick weapons in 2022.
