Latest 2021 mock draft nets Dolphins major haul in trade down scenario

March 2, 2021 by Dolphins Wire Leave a Comment

The Miami Dolphins may have a number of tough choices to make ahead of them this offseason but at the very least the team can rest easy knowing that they’ll have no shortage of options to move forward with in the coming months. And if the Dolphins feel compelled, they will presumably have a number of dance partners for their top draft selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

One such hypothetical was explored by Trevor Sikkema of The Draft Network, whose latest mock draft tumbled the Dolphins all the way out of the top-10 picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. If that sounds problematic, we’d encourage you to reconsider — as the Dolphins got a major, major return for their trouble in this draft scenario.

Miami Dolphins receive:

  • San Francisco’s 2021 1st-round pick (No. 12 overall)
  • 3rd-round pick (projected compensatory pick for minority hires)
  • Two 2021 5th-round picks
  • 2022 1st-round pick (TBD)
  • 2022 3rd-round pick (TBD)
  • 2023 2nd-round pick (TBD)

San Francisco 49ers receive:

  • Miami’s 2021 1st-round pick (No. 3 overall courtesy of HOU)
  • 2021 6th-round pick

Is nine spots in the order, including behind the New York Giants, a risky move to make? Certainly. But the Dolphins would be cashing out of the Laremy Tunsil prized asset for yet another haul the size of the Laremy Tunsil deal. That’s hard not to get excited about as the Dolphins continue to explore bolstering their roster with young talent. And if the trade returns weren’t enough to excite, guess who the Dolphins end up securing at No. 12 overall in Sikkema’s mock after all that?

No. 12 overall – WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

“In the second half of the 49ers/Dolphins swap, I have the Dolphins grabbing a wide receiver their current quarterback Tua Tagovailoa knows very well. I do believe the NFL will be hesitant on a player of Smith’s build…picks 10-20 is a perfect range to project him. Here, I have the Dolphins making the pick to complement what they already have in Preston Williams and DeVante Parker.” – Trevor Sikkema, The Draft Network

Miami’s other 1st-round selection provided Brian Flores with a hybrid defender who will certainly be able to fulfill a slew of roles in the Dolphins’ defense in 2021 and beyond:

No. 18 overall – LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Notre Dame

“I really do think the Dolphins consider (RB Najee) Harris if he’s still available at this spot. But in this mock draft, he’s not. So instead, they can pick up a hybrid safety/linebacker player who can fill more of the box role they thought Minkah Fitzpatrick would…Owusu-Koramoah can be more of that primary box player who brings plus speed with his physicality to the linebacker level. You don’t want him playing true linebacker and trying to fit the run between the tackles full-time, but I believe the Dolphins already have a good idea carved out for a player with his skill set.” – Trevor Sikkema, The Draft Network
