After multiple serious head injuries suffered during the 2022 NFL season, many wondered if Tua Tagovailoa’s football career was over.
On Wednesday, the Miami Dolphins quarterback revealed that he asked himself that same question.
Tua said he talked to his family about hanging up the cleats and retiring from the NFL — but ultimately decided that he wanted to keep going.
“I considered [retiring],” he said, per team insider Cameron Wolfe. “… Really, it would be hard for me to walk away from this game… It’s my health, it’s my body. I feel like this is what’s best for me.
“I love the game of football and I want to play a long time.”

Tua suffered multiple concussions during the 2022 season. The worst came during a Week 4 game against the Cincinnati Bengals when he went into the fencer pose and had to be carted off the field. He sustained another head injury in Week 16, ending his season.
Tagovailoa was in the midst of his best NFL season before his campaign was derailed by these concerning injuries. That being said, the fourth-year quarterback will be ready for the start of the 2023 season.
