Miami Dolphins sign troubled, yet productive, starting caliber cornerback

Cornerback Jack Jones signs with Miami Dolphins days into training camp.

The Miami Dolphins’ new-look secondary gained another fresh face on Saturday morning as the team agreed to a one-year contract with veteran cornerback Jack Jones according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Free-agent CB Jack Jones, who started 16 games last season for the Raiders, is signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, per source.

Jones, formerly of the New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders, has been a productive player in his four seasons in the National Football League — totaling 7 interceptions during that time — yet he has yet to secure a big-money deal, due in part to his questionable off-field decision making.

As a college player, Jones was arrested for commercial burglary and ultimately dismissed from the University of Southern California ahead of his junior season due to academic struggles.

Following his rookie season with the Patriots, Jones was arrested for bringing two loaded guns to Boston’s Logan Airport. Charges were later dropped, however after missing curfew during his second season in New England, Jones was released from the team.

After just two seasons with the Raiders — during which he tallied five interceptions — Jones was cut by the team after Las Vegas was unsuccessful in their attempts to trade the young player.

Jones is coming off of a career year in Las Vegas — totaling 69 tackles, 16 passes defensed and three interceptions in 2024, however he did give up 698 yards, nine touchdowns and a passer rating of 108.9 according to Pro Football Focus.

The Dolphins will hope to get the best out of the 27-year-old, while also keeping his behavior in check. If Jones is able to keep his head on straight, he will have the potential to earn a starting job in Miami and get his young career back on track.
