The Miami Dolphins leaned on the passing game during Mike McDaniel’s first season as first coach. They attempted 390 runs, the NFL’s second-lowest tally behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (386).
Based on comments from Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert, McDaniel may want to adjust that play-calling distribution.
“One thing [McDaniel] was very apologetic about was we didn’t run enough, and he was going to do his best to change that in coming years,” Mostert said Tuesday, per the Miami Herald‘s Barry Jackson. “Talk like that gets me fired up even more.”
Interesting sessions with Dolphins Mostert & Baker just now. Mostert said McDaniel was apologetic with RBs about not running ball more last season (only TB ran less). Baker said Fangio defense has fewer rules, offers more freedom than Patriots-style defense team ran past 4 years.

Mostert set career-highs in carries (181) and rushing yards (891) as Miami’s lead back last season. But McDaniel never leaned too heavily on the veteran, who’s endured injuries throughout his career.
The former undrafted free agent didn’t see more than 18 handoffs in any of 16 games played during his eighth season. While Mostert stayed healthy, Jeff Wilson Jr. and Chase Edmonds played eight games each.
Even if Miami runs more in 2023, Mostert will likely share backfield reps. The Dolphins drafted Devon Achane, a speedy back from Texas A&M, with the No. 84 pick.
Mostert said McDaniel is “totally locked in” and believes Miami’s offense will “wreak havoc.”
