PFF ranks Dolphins receiving corps among best in the NFL

June 17, 2022 by Dolphins Wire

The Miami Dolphins had an offense that struggled to put up points consistently in 2021, so general manager Chris Grier and new head coach Mike McDaniel opted to add a ton of talented pieces to that side of the ball.

Miami added traded for Tyreek Hill, signed Cedrick Wilson Jr. and drafted Erik Ezukanma to add to a group of receivers and tight ends that already boasted Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki as threats.

While the offseason is hitting its down period, everyone is assessing where teams are heading into training camps in just over a month and comparing them to other situations.

Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey recently tiered and ranked the receiving corps (wideouts and tight ends) of all 32 NFL teams, and the Dolphins were in the top tier that he called “Elite,” and they were the third group overall.

Here’s what Linsey wrote about the Dolphins’ pass-catchers:

“Via an offseason trade, Tyreek Hill joined forces with the player closest to his unique blend of speed and twitch in the open field — Jaylen Waddle. Opposing defenses are going to have to grapple with the best way to mitigate risk and limit the damage caused by that duo all season.

Hill and Waddle aren’t the only quality receiving options for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, either. Tight end Mike Gesicki has 32 contested catches over the past two seasons (tied for fourth in NFL), and free agent acquisition Cedrick Wilson steps in as the No. 3 wide receiver after a career year with the Cowboys in 2021 (71.6 PFF receiving grade).”

Miami’s weapons were only behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams have three players on the depth chart that are all talented and could go off at any time.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Las Vegas Raiders, who rounded out the top five, could have arguments to get into the top three as well. Philadelphia’s acquisition of A.J. Brown to pair with DeVonta Smith, and Las Vegas’ trade for DeVante Adams to add to Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow, make them dangerous offenses.

Right now, it’d probably be safe to say that most would take Miami’s corps over the Eagles’ and Raiders’.
