Three years ago, the Miami Dolphins signed cornerback Byron Jones to a five-year, $82 million free agent contract.
Fast forward to now and the team plans to release the 30-year-old defender, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Miami has reportedly told Jones it will release him on March 15 when the new league year begins.
“Dolphins will designate him a post-June 1 cut, saving Miami $13.6 million against its salary cap,” Schefter said of Jones.
Jones missed the entire 2022 season after having Achilles surgery. He said on Twitter last month that he “can’t run or jump” due to the injuries he suffered in the NFL.
When the Dolphins signed Jones in 2020, they made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at the time. The 2015 first-round pick was coming off five productive seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
In his first two years with Miami, Jones started 30 regular season games, recording 95 tackles, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed and two forced fumbles.
We’ll see if Jones wants to try his hand with another team in 2023, or if he’s contemplating retirement due to his health issues.
