On Tuesday morning, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero announced that Miami will place the franchise tag on tight end Mike Gesicki. This decision could lead to some drama in the coming weeks.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, several people in the league believe Gesicki could file grievance over the franchise tag position.
Tight ends will make $10.9 million this season under the franchise tag. Wide receivers, however, will make $18.4 million.
It’ll be tough for Gesicki to win this potential grievance, but it’s worth noting that he was used as a pass blocker on only 3.7 percent of his snaps last season. That’s the fourth-lowest mark among tight ends in the NFL.
Several people league-wide believe Mike Gesicki could file grievance over franchise tag position (TE at $10.9M vs. WR at $18.4M). These are tough sells but consider these numbers:
-Gesicki pass-blocked 3.7% of QB drop backs, fourth-lowest among TEs; 266 run blocks tied for 28th

Jimmy Graham filed a grievance over his position back in 2014. He was ultimately ruled a tight end for the New Orleans Saints.
Gesicki has been a reliable pass catcher for the Dolphins since he was drafted in 2018, hauling in 199 passes for 2,255 yards and 13 touchdowns.
The Dolphins could sign Gesicki to a long-term contract this offseason, but those negotiations might be put on hold if he files a grievance over his franchise tag position.
