Skylar Thompson signs new contract…but not with Miami Dolphins

Skylar Thompson signed a futures contract a day after the Miami Dolphins let him go.

The Miami Dolphins allowed quarterback Skylar Thompson’s practice squad contract to expire on Monday, effectively making him a free agent after choosing to not sign him to a reserve/future contract for the 2025 season. The team’s 2022 seventh-round pick was not out of a job for long, however. On Tuesday, Thompson’s agency, SportsTrust Advisors indicated Thompson was joining the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Thompson, who was selected with the 247th overall pick, joined the Dolphins after six years at Kansas State. He initially began his career on Miami’s active roster as a rookie, playing behind Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater. He appeared in seven games his rookie season, starting two of them, with a 57.1 percent completion rate for 534 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions for a 62.2 passer rating.

He also started the Dolphins’ playoff game that season, throwing for 220 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions in the team’s 34-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

After making no appearances in 2023, Thompson played in three games this season, starting one, with a 63.6 percent completion rate, throwing for 187 yards. He initially served as the primary backup behind Tagovailoa, beating out Mike White for the job during the preseason, but his shaky performance in filling in for Tagovailoa, who sustained a concussion in Week 2, made the team look for other options. Miami tried Tim Boyle at quarterback as well, but eventually added Tyler Huntley, who took over as the team’s primary backup, starting five games.

Thompson now joins the Steelers, where quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are both scheduled to be free agents in March.
