Terron Armstead explains what makes an offensive line successful

July 12, 2022 by Dolphins Wire

The Miami Dolphins put quite a bit of faith in left tackle Terron Armstead when they signed the former New Orleans Saint to a five-year deal worth up to $87.5 million this offseason.

He’s being asked to take charge of an offensive line that needs leadership and ability, and Armstead has brought both of those things in his career.

Last week, Armstead joined the “GoJo” podcast with Mike Golic Jr., and Miami’s left tackle about a number of topics, including his insights into what makes an offensive line great. He outlined three aspects that young linemen need to focus on if they want to make it in the NFL.

“Work, consistency, unselfishness, I would say, and that’s freestyling,” Armstead said. “Call it the three attributes that you would need to see. You need to see work, consistency and unselfishness. The work got to be drilling that technique. It’s a technique-driven position. You gotta constantly drill that technique and never be content.

“Consistency, we’re in the business of results and performance. If you’re not performing, you’re not producing, they look elsewhere. So, we’re working that technique, and then you go out and you perform and [with] consistency and at a high level.

“Then, being unselfish. You make sure you’re doing everything you need to do to be your best self at practice and then again on Sunday. You’re being unselfish by sacrificing your time and energy, giving that, devoting that, to the team. Not playing for yourself. You’re playing within the scheme. If need to be there for the guard, I gotta be there for the guard.”

The Dolphins have some unproven linemen that they’re expecting to learn from Armstead. Robert Hunt has been solid early in his career. However, Liam Eichenberg and Austin Jackson, two early picks from recent drafts, will need to pick up as much as they can from Armstead because, as he said, if they don’t produce, Miami will look elsewhere.
