Amid a slew of reports that the Miami Dolphins were ready to move heaven and earth to bring Tom Brady into the fold, questions of whether the Dolphins may have engaged in tampering are starting to emerge.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk reported that the Miami Dolphins were ready to make Brady a minority owner in the team and try to hire Sean Payton as their new head coach in one fell swoop. But with so much going on behind the scenes, Florio speculates that some of the steps the Dolphins took may have amounted to tampering.
“Many believe that Brady is the unnamed quarterback in the (Brian) Flores lawsuit with whom owner Stephen Ross wanted Flores to tamper in 2020. If the Dolphins had a plan that started with Brady becoming a post-retirement minority owner and ended with Brady coming out of retirement to play for the team, there surely were one or more impermissible communications between the Dolphins and/or Brady and/or his agent, Don Yee (who also represents Payton),” ProFootballTalk summarized.
Florio and his fellow NBC contributors are hardly the first to make this suggestion. Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson has also written a column suggesting that the league investigate.

But the NFL has pretty much always been very lax with its enforcement of tampering. The most we’ve seen in recent years are six-digit fines to billionaire owners or the occasional draft pick forfeiture.
Those are hardly punishments that will cripple an organization.
So even if the NFL does decide to start checking phone logs at Hard Rock Stadium, it’s not like there will be some big perp walk that guilty parties walk afterwards.
Tampering in the NFL is an accepted reality. No amount of pounding the table will change that.
