Tom Brady Was “Very Close” To Joining Another NFL Team

April 7, 2022 by The Spun

Tom Brady #12 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shouts as he takes the field before Super Bowl LV

Tom Brady retired on Feb. 1. Just weeks later, he returned to the game he loves. Why the change of heart? Let’s just say it’s complicated.

According to Pro Football Talk, Brady was “very close” to becoming a Miami Dolphin this offseason.

Brady had intentions to become a minority owner in Miami, according to reports. If he had, the Dolphins reportedly would have eventually acquired the rights to steal Brady from the Bucs’ roster.

Could you imagine Brady playing for the Dolphins this next season? It almost happened, per Mike Florio. It still could happen considering Brady’s contract with the Buccaneers is up after this season.

“Even though it didn’t happen, it’s an important consideration because Brady will continue to hover as a potential addition to the Dolphins,” Florio reports, via Pro Football Talk. “He has a close relationship with Bruce Beal, the right-hand man and successor-in-waiting to Dolphins owner Stephen Ross. With Brady under contract for one more season in Tampa Bay and his deal containing a no-tag clause, Brady will be a free agent in 2023. He will be able to sign with any team he chooses.”

It’s purely speculation here. Tom Brady would have had to approach the Bucs’ front office and request a trade to the Dolphins. Considering he won them a Super Bowl they’d probably oblige, but they wouldn’t have been left empty-handed.

Miami likely would have sent Tua Tagovailoa to Tampa Bay in a deal for Brady. The Buccaneers would have wanted their next franchise quarterback in the deal.

All the speculation can die down a bit now. Brady is a Buc, at least for the 2022 season.
