Tua Tagovailoa reportedly ‘has no plans to retire,’ working to return

September 17, 2024 by Dolphins Wire

Amid plenty of speculation about what Tua Tagovailoa should do with his career after another scary concussion, he’s reportedly not thinking about anything other than getting back on the field with the Miami Dolphins.

“My understanding is that Tua Tagovailoa has no plans to retire,” Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday morning. “In fact, his eyes are already on returning to the football field. As far as when that comes, we simply do not know.

“He has already begun the process of seeing concussion specialists, as he did in 2022. … The goal is to get back on the field when he is ready.”

Tagovailoa, 26, told reporters in April 2023 that multiple concussions during the 2022 season led him to consider retirement, but he decided against it.

“It’s my health. It’s my body,” Tagovailoa told reporters at the time. “And I feel like this is what’s best for me and my family. I love the game of football. If I didn’t, I would’ve quit a long time [ago].”

Instead, the quarterback added weight in the 2023 offseason and did martial arts training aimed at lessening the impact on his head. He played a 17-game season without a significant injury and earned Pro Bowl honors with an NFL-leading 4,624 passing yards.

The injury suffered by Tagovailoa on Thursday night is the fourth diagnosed concussion for the quarterback in the last five years.
