UFC 264 | Poirier, Burns Victorious With Titles Shots in Sight

July 29, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal Leave a Comment

At the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC 264 was an extremely exciting event for many UFC fans. As well as a sold-out, full-capacity crowd in attendance, UFC 264 was the second-most bought PPV event in history – just behind McGregor vs Khabib at UFC 229.

There were a number of major talking points around UFC 264 at the weekend, with some interesting results. Poirier managed to pull off the victory in the main event, but an injury suffered by McGregor was the difference. Here’s what happened at the latest UFC event.

Is the Poirier vs McGregor Feud Over?

The trilogy fight between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor ended in unfortunate circumstances, with The Notorious One breaking his left ankle in the first round. As a result, the doctor and referee ended the fight at the end of the first five minutes.

There has obviously been a lot of back and forth since – as everyone has probably already seen – but it isn’t likely that the story is over. In McGregor’s words “This isn’t over!”, so it is likely that we will see these two step into the octagon once more down the line.

With that said, Poirier has put himself in a great position in the lightweight division, and will no doubt be looking at Charles Oliveira and his UFC lightweight title.

Gilbert Burns Earns Decision Win in Exciting Co-Main Event

In the welterweight division, two veterans of the octagon went toe-to-toe in an entertaining bout. The fight lasted the whole 15 minutes, with a lot of mutual respect between the two fighters evident immediately after the final second.

After a dominant first-round with a successful takedown and ground game showing, Wonderboy was up against it. Following an exciting second, the final round was all to fight for. Burns edged it, and rightly so, and is now positioned as No.2 contender for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title.

If Usman does fight No.1 contender Colby Covington, there’s little doubt that Burns will be eagerly-awaiting to see who is crowned the winner. More importantly, who he will fight for the UFC belt.

Tai Tuivasa Impresses with KO Victory

Tai Tuivasa – a very good stand up fighter in the heavyweight division. After some strong leg kicks and jabs connecting with his opponent, Tai capitalized. As Hardy went to gage an attack on Tuivasa, the Australian delivered a left hook to end the fight just one minute into the first round.

With Hardy stunned, Tuivasa finished the fight with shots to Hardy on the canvas, before the referee swiftly stopped the fight. It was a great victory for the Australian, as Tuivasa continues to climb his way through the UFC rankings in the heavyweight division.

UFC – What’s Next?

Fortunately, if you’re a big fan of UFC, then you’re in luck – there’s action every weekend between now and mid-August! That’s right, UFC Fight Nights fill the next three weekends, with some great fights involved. Then, it’s onto UFC 265!

In the main event on August 7, we will see Derrick Lewis step toe-to-toe with Frenchman Ciryl Gane in a highly-anticipated heavyweight clash. If that wasn’t enough, the event’s co-main bout involves arguably the pound-for-pound greatest women’s fighter, Amanda Nunes, take on Julianna Pena.
