Young Head Coach Gets Extension

September 1, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Mike McDaniel Extension

NFL head coaches have an extremely tough job, which is no secret. Teams make it an absolute priority to find the right head coach for their team. When they find that coach, keep him. Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has gotten a contract extension to remain the team’s head coach through 2028. McDaniel has been a brilliant offensive mind for the Dolphins, and has led the franchise to two consecutive playoff appearances.

Dolphins Sign Mike McDaniel to Massive Extension

What Led To This Deal

McDaniel has seen a lot of success in his first two years with the Dolphins. In his first year, the team went 9-8 and made a playoff appearance. However, that does not tell the full story as the team was decimated by injuries. Starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa dealt with multiple ailments throughout the season, and missed the team’s playoff game. Last season was even better for McDaniel and the Dolphins. They improved on their 9-8 record by two games, posting an 11-6 record and securing another playoff spot. The only knock on McDaniel so far is the 0-2 record, but context is important. In 2022, Tagovailoa was out against the Buffalo Bills. Last season, they played the juggernaut Kansas City Chiefs in -40 degree weather. McDaniel will be looking for a better playoff draw in the future.

What Lies Ahead

Miami has had an offensive identity in their two seasons under McDaniel. That will not change. Tagovailoa, superstar receiver Tyreek Hill, running back Devon Achane, and wideout Jaylen Waddle have formed an electric offense in south beach. All of these core guys are returning, and have another year in McDaniel’s system under their belts. Defensively, there is more room for improvement. Miami’s defense was middle of the pack last season, allowing 23 points per game. This will be a key are to watch and see if there is improvement under McDaniel this season.
