Heat re-sign Dewayne Dedmon on one-year deal

Miami adds to their bench depth with Dedmon, who provided them with solid play last season.

The Miami Heat have re-signed Dewayne Dedmon on a one-year deal according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, it was announced Monday evening.

Free agent center Dewayne Dedmon has agreed to a one-year deal to return to the Miami Heat, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

After getting waived by the Detroit Pistons last offseason, the journeyman signed with the Heat on Apr. 8, 2021. He played in 16 regular season contests, averaging 7.1 points and 5.4 assists in 13.1 minutes per game — equating to 19.4 points and 14.7 rebounds per 36 minutes.

Dedmon, listed at 7-foot, shot 70.8 percent with a 73.5 true shooting percentage and a 24.5 player efficiency rating (PER) last season. He brought veteran leadership, toughness and grit to Miami’s frontcourt, which has Bam Adebayo and now joined by newly-signed PJ Tucker.

The 31-year-old was arguably Miami’s only source of semblance at backup center. When he was on the floor and Adebayo wasn’t, the Heat outscored points by 15.9 points per 100 possessions, ranking in the 98th percentile, per Cleaning the Glass.

Here is what I said about Dedmon in his player review in June, when talking about his organizational fit.

There’s a glaring hole at Miami’s backup 5 spot, so it could re-sign the 31-year-old on a team-friendly contract. While the Heat will likely address the market first, it’s plausible that they bring back Dedmon. He’s built chemistry with Heat players and represents the mold that this organization’s all about.

Can confirm Dedmon re-signed, as Shams just noted. So Heat has Butler, Bam, Robinson, Herro, Lowry, Dedmon, Tucker and potentially Okpala. More to come in coming hours or days.
