The current Miami Heat season may be heading for severe disappointment, but even in the darkest of stretches the Heat have faced this season, there are a few bright spots. This season marks the second consecutive year Miami has drafted well, and the two Heat rookie players this season—Pelle Larsson and Kel’el Ware—have given Miami and Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra much to be happy about. Specifically, in Larsson’s case, Spoelstra sees an ‘interesting young guy’ as he puts it. That’s not all the league-wide respected bench boss had to say about his rookie, though.
Heat Rookie Showing Erik Spoelstra A Bevy of Intangibles
Miami Heat Rookie Pelle Larsson Has Erik Spoelstra Calling Him An ‘Ignitable Player’
Larsson and Ware have stood tall in their first seasons in the NBA. Ware has been granted the most minutes between the two, averaging 21 per night to Larsson’s 12. Spoelstra has taken to the mic on more than one occasion this season to talk about Ware and what he’s brought to the table in his inaugural season. Now, it’s Larsson’s turn to receive some positive musings from his head coach. Larsson is coming off playing 30 minutes against the Philadelphia 76ers this weekend. It also happened to be a Heat win, their fourth in a row following 10 consecutive losses.
Following Pelle’s 14-point performance against the Sixers, Spoelstra spoke in the postgame press conference and offered a bevy of intangibles that Larsson has shown over the course of the season. Some of Larsson’s exploits don’t appear on the stat sheet, and Spoelstra highlighted those equally to the ones that do [8:55 mark].
“Pelle, he’s just an ignitable player, he makes things happen out there,” Spoelstra said. “The steals, the deflections, the hard plays, those are momentum shifting plays that he has a knack for, and he spends so much time in the gym that the rest of his game is getting better. The playmaking, the shooting, the facilitating, he’s a really interesting young guy.”
A Good Future Ahead in South Beach
It’s the hard plays—the momentum-shifting ones that don’t appear on a stat sheet. But Spoelstra is the type of coach who loves players who do the non-statistical hard work. Larsson is only averaging 4.0 points on the season, but the other things he does to impact that game are making a difference and an impression. The same was said for Jaime Jaquez Jr., who the Heat drafted in the 2023 offseason, now playing in his second season. He came in his rookie year and earned Spoelstra’s trust almost immediately. It wasn’t necessarily because of his scoring or shooting. Instead, the hard work, fighting for balls and making game-changing plays with his effort earned Spoelstra’s trust. Larsson appears to be taking some of Jaquez’s heart and mindset and transferring it to himself. It’s no wonder Spoelstra likes what he sees.
This season appears lost, and offseason changes are surely to come. However, as it stands with their young players, Miami has a solid bunch. All the Heat need now is a contending team built around Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Perhaps another superstar will enter the fold during the summer. As for Larsson, he’s making the right impression, which bodes well for him and his role next season.
