Nonchalant Heat Cornerstone Talks Trade Rumors, Distractions

January 1, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James and Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler embrace on the sideline

The Miami Heat are pretty familiar with trade rumors but this season has been different.

For starters, many of the reports are centered on six-time All-Star and five-time All-Defensive selection Jimmy Butler rather than stretch-forward Duncan Robinson or Tyler Herro, the 2022 Sixth Man of the Year. Though Robinson and Herro have played key roles for the Heat, Butler has been more central to the team’s success. Furthermore, while plenty of speculation can be dismissed, ESPN senior insider Shams Charania doubled-down on his report that Butler is eyeing an exit out of Miami. It’s hard to believe he would put his reputation on the line just for a headline and yet that’s what Butler’s agent is saying he’s doing.

The noise had become so loud that Heat president Pat Riley released a statement saying they weren’t trading Butler.

After a brief illness-related absence, Butler was asked whether he had held any conversations with Riley where things stand between them. He initially tried to plead the fifth (h/t Brendan Tobin of Tobin & Leroy):

“Next.”

A few minutes later, Butler was more cooperative but still cryptic.

“Only time will tell” if he’ll be happy playing out the rest of the season with the Heat, he said. “I appreciate the statement but this is a business, after all” (h/t Zachary Weinberger of ClutchPoints). “I won’t have hard feelings either way.”

On Pat Riley’s statement and if he will be happy with playing out the season.

“We will see, only time will tell. I can’t tell what’s finna happen come tomorrow, but I appreciate the statement. But this is a business…I won’t have any hard feelings either way.” #HeatNation pic.twitter.com/dZqNjhowrt

“That’s up to Pat and them,” he continues when asked about his future with the Heat. “They’re going to do what’s best for the team, as they should. As always, I’m happy and right now, I’m happy. I’m in a good space, I will tell you that. I got my kids here healthy and smiling, I promise you I’m happy.”

Jimmy Butler is asked about the possibility of an amicable divorce with the team and the future and once again says he doesn’t know, however, he would state how he’s happy and in a good place. #HeatNation pic.twitter.com/nmEYBpQHUr

The nonchalance only increased towards the end of his presser, Butler proudly proclaiming: “I honestly do not care about getting traded, where I’m supposed to go, who’s saying what. I play through all that noise easily.”

Asked Jimmy Butler on the noise and if it’s a distraction.

“I think we’re used to that by now, at least it’s not about anybody else, I honestly do not care about getting traded, where I’m supposed to go, who’s saying what, I play through all that noise…” #HeatNation pic.twitter.com/sy2MtYgycl

Whether Riley stays true to his word or caves, it’s clear that the 35-year-old taking this all in stride.
