The Phoenix Suns Need Jimmy Butler as Their “Missing Piece”

January 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Jimmy Butler has been linked to the Suns.

With a team full of elite players like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns have advanced significantly in recent years. However, the Suns have had difficulty continuously establishing themselves as the top team in the Western Conference, even with their indisputable firepower and championship ambitions. One name jumps out as the ideal missing component as trade negotiations intensify during the 2024–2025 NBA season: Jimmy Butler. The Suns need Jimmy “Buckets” Butler as their “missing piece” to win their first title. Here are several reasons why Butler might be the driving force behind Phoenix’s eventual Larry O’Brien Trophy arrival.

The Phoenix Suns Need Jimmy Butler as Their “Missing Piece”

Defensive Leadership and Versatility

The Suns’ inconsistent defense, especially on the perimeter, has been one of their most obvious shortcomings this season. Despite occasional displays of defensive mastery, Durant, Booker, and Beal continue to prioritize offensive production. Here comes Butler, a five-time All-Defensive player who excels at guarding opponents and rising up when it counts. Phoenix’s defensive strategies would be strengthened by Butler’s ability to guard several spots, giving them the grit and toughness they need to slow down top scorers such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and Luka Doncic. Additionally, by having him there, Booker and Durant would be able to save energy on defense and flourish offensively when it counts most.

Clutch Playoff Performer

The Suns have had postseason heartbreaks in previous years, with breakdowns in execution during the high-pressure moments. Jimmy Butler’s playoff track record speaks for itself. Butler has repeatedly shown that he performs well under pressure, earning the nickname “Playoff Jimmy” for his capacity to step up when the stakes are highest. The Suns’ roster would gain new stability and confidence from his leadership and big-game experience.

Unselfish Play and a Winning Mentality

Butler’s selflessness is among his most underappreciated qualities. Even though he is a superstar, he has always put the success of the team above his recognition. This way of thinking would fit in well with the Suns’ philosophy, which places a strong emphasis on teamwork and ball movement. By serving as a secondary playmaker, Butler may relieve Booker’s playmaking burden. Thus freeing them up to concentrate on scoring. His readiness to put in the grunt effort, whether it be creating screens, diving for loose balls, or drawing charges, would set the tone for a Suns club eager to win its first NBA title.

What Would It Take?

Butler won’t be inexpensive to get. Financially, the Suns would have to give up Beal. The Suns also don’t have much draft capital to make an inciting offer for Butler. Notably, the Miami Heat are reportedly not interested in Beal. This makes a possible Butler-Suns trade more challenging, and a third team is necessary. The Suns have been linked to Butler since the start of this saga, but no move has materialized largely due to the Heat’s lack of interest in Beal. The trouble for the Heat will be finding a third team willing to take on Beal’s massive salary that would also provide them with some win-now assets.

In a possible three-team trade the Suns might also have to move off of role players like Grayson Allen. Even though this could seem like a high cost, the chance to win a title makes the risk worthwhile. Butler would immediately make the Suns one of the league’s most balanced teams and have a win-now mentality. For a 16-18 team a move that would propel the Suns into contention is worth the risk.

The Last Word

The front office of the Suns must make a crucial choice as the trade deadline draws near. They will have to put in a lot of effort if they want to win their first NBA title. In the end, Butler can be the “missing piece” that helps them realize their goals. However, it will be crucial for the Heat and Suns to find a third team so this blockbuster trade can happen.
