The United States will host Copa America 2024 after advanced negotiations with Conmebol

The 2024 Copa America tournament will be played in the United States, Conmebol confirmed this Friday after an agreement between the South American soccer confederation and Concacaf.

The 2023–24 Concacaf Nations League will consist of 16 teams, 10 from Conmebol and six from Concacaf, with teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean confederation qualifying through the tournament. Mexico to Copa America after a long break.

According to sources, talks are already underway with some potential venues in the United States, and several cities hosting the World Cup games in 2026 could also be used for the Copa America.

For women’s national teams, Concacaf has invited the top four Conmebol national teams to participate in the 2024 Concacaf Gold Cup W. The inaugural edition of the 12-team tournament will also be played in the United States.

The two Concacaf teams participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics (USA and Jamaica or Canada) will qualify directly for the 2024 Concacaf Gold Cup W. The remaining six Concacaf teams will be determined by route to the 2023 Gold Cup. .

Based on the results of the 2022 Copa America Feminina, the four invited CONMEBOL teams have been determined: Brazil (champion), Colombia (second place), Argentina (third place) and Paraguay (fourth place).

The Copa America features all South American national teams, including Brazil and Argentina, but has historically invited invited nations to participate as well.

The U.S. has previously competed in the tournament four times, reaching the semifinals in 2016. That competition was also held in America.

“Conmebol and Concacaf are united by historical and affective ties,” Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez said in a statement. “But above all, we are united by the passion across America for soccer and sports.

“We are committed to renewing and expanding our joint ventures and projects. We want to translate this passion into more and better tournaments and to grow and strengthen football and its values ​​across the hemisphere.

“Without a doubt, both confederations believe in something big and we will act with this orientation.”

Conmebol said in a statement that the 2024 Copa America would serve as “preparation for the next World Cup” and give teams the opportunity to participate in the 2026 World Cup host country.

“This is a partnership to support the continued development of men’s and women’s football in CONCACAF and CONMEBOL and is truly mutually beneficial for both confederations,” CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani said in a statement. “Working hand-in-hand with CONMEBOL, we will deliver elite competitions that offer more opportunities for our confederations and that we know passionate fans want to watch.

“We look forward to working together to ensure football continues to thrive in both regions.”
