Analyzing NL East teams on SimBull following trade deadline

July 31, 2021 by Fish Stripes Leave a Comment

@Mets/Twitter

Where will SimBraves, SimMarlins, SimMets, SimNationals and SimPhillies go from here?

We just witnessed one of the most eventful MLB trade deadlines in recent memory! The National League East was at the heart of it, acquiring and bidding farewell to stars who have the potential to impact the 2021 World Series race. On the other side of those transactions, teams took big steps towards securing their long-term future with young, controllable talent.

With two-plus months remaining in the regular season, here’s where the Braves, Marlins, Mets, Nationals and Phillies find themselves in the division standings:

Which NL East teams struck the right balance with their moves? That’s where SimBull comes in—knowledgeable fans can invest in any of them now and profit from their results on the field. How is the SimMLB market reacting to what we just saw? Trade deadline additions/subtractions listed below account for moves that were completed during the final week of July.

SimBraves

Current Price: $35.30

Trade Deadline Additions: OF Adam Duvall, RHP Richard Rodríguez, OF Eddie Rosario, OF Jorge Soler

Trade Deadline Subtractions: RHP Ricky DeVito, C Alex Jackson, RHP Kasey Kalich, INF Pablo Sandoval, RHP Bryse Wilson

Atlanta’s current outfield is unrecognizable. There is no replacing Ronald Acuña Jr.—sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury—but credit to their front office for using spending power and upper-minors depth to acquire several veterans who have power-hitting upside.

All in all, the SimBraves share price is identical to where it was at the end of June. The team’s streak of postseason berths will very likely come to an end, but their window to contend should remain open for several more years beyond that. Re-signing reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman to a new contract will be critical.

SimMarlins

MLB: San Diego Padres at Miami Marlins
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Current Price: $31.07

Trade Deadline Additions: OF Bryan De La Cruz, C Payton Henry, C Alex Jackson, LHP Jesús Luzardo, RHP Austin Pruitt

Trade Deadline Subtractions: RHP John Curtiss, OF Adam Duvall, RHP Yimi García, OF Starling Marte

I was underwhelmed with Miami’s handling of the deadline. So was much of the Fish Stripes staff. Interestingly, the SimMarlins price soared by nearly 9% on Friday.

Pitching will continue to be a strength. The Marlins are gradually getting tons of starting rotation depth back from injuries, and a surprising majority of their experienced relievers stayed through the deadline. They did not pull the trigger yet, but inevitably, some of their prospect depth will be used to improve the offensive production at the middle-of-the-diamond positions.

SimMets

Current Price: $35.04

Trade Deadline Additions: INF Javier Báez, LHP Rich Hill, RHP Trevor Williams

Trade Deadline Subtractions: OF Pete Crow-Armstrong, C Matt Dyer, RHP Tommy Hunter

El Mago is the perfect rental for the Mets, somebody who could fill the temporary void with Francisco Lindor on the IL and eventually complement him.

However, Jacob deGrom’s outstanding season has taken a dark turn. Once Max Scherzer reportedly refused to waive his no-trade clause to come to Queens, that left the Mets without any trade targets capable of producing a facsimile of the ace’s production.

SimMets is a worthwhile investment if you trust deGrom to make it back on the mound by early September.

SimNationals

Thank you, Max. For everything.

• 189 starts
• 1,610 strikeouts
• 76 10-K games
• 6 All-Star selections
• 2 Cy Young Awards
• 1 20-K game
• 1 World Series ring
• A lifetime of memories

— Washington Nationals (@Nationals) July 30, 2021

Current Price: $26.70

Trade Deadline Additions: C Riley Adams, INF Jordy Barley, OF Donovan Casey, RHP Gerardo Carrillo, RHP Josiah Gray, RHP Richard Guasch, C Drew Millas, RHP Aldo Ramirez, C Keibert Ruiz, RHP Seth Shuman, OF Lane Thomas, RHP Mason Thompson

Trade Deadline Subtractions: C Yan Gomes, LHP Brad Hand, INF Josh Harrison, RHP Daniel Hudson, LHP Jon Lester, RHP Max Scherzer, OF Kyle Schwarber, INF Trea Turner

SimNationals was the market’s biggest loser on July 30. Not just among MLB team stocks—its 6.44% drop exceeded any of the NFL, NBA and college football offerings on SimBull, too.

Understandable, but the Nats are fully aware that Juan Soto is on an all-time great trajectory. They won’t waste his prime with a slow, methodical rebuild. Although Washington’s front office punted on the rest of 2021, their next aggressive spending spree may happen sooner than you think.

SimPhillies

Current Price: $30.34

Trade Deadline Additions: RHP Hans Crouse, INF Freddy Galvis, RHP Kyle Gibson, RHP Ian Kennedy, LHP Braeden Ogle

Trade Deadline Subtractions: RHP Josh Gessner, RHP Kevin Gowdy, C Abrahan Gutierrez, RHP Spencer Howard

Such a “meh” team. The Phillies were playing some of their best baseball entering the All-Star break, then undid most of that progress over the following two weeks.

Their most noteworthy deadline pick-ups, Gibson and Kennedy, are old guys in the midst of surprising career years. Does anybody really believe in them to keep it up down the stretch?

Hold SimPhillies shares for 2022. Perhaps you’ll get rewarded with gains sooner than that if the Mets’ injuries allow the Phils to stumble into October.
