Blue Jays Obtain Two Relievers In Trade With Miami

August 3, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

The Toronto Blue Jays are getting right-handed relievers Anthony Bass, Zach Pop, and a player named later from the Miami Marlins. According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Blue Jays prospect Jordan Groshans will be headed to the Marlins. Groshans, the 12th overall pick of the 2018 MLB Draft, is batting .250/.348/.296 at Triple-A Buffalo. The move signals much-needed bullpen help for the Blue Jays, who are in the thick of the AL Wild Card race.

Anthony Bass has been excellent this season for Miami. Bass has a 1.41 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 44 innings. Overall, he has a 2.80 ERA over 105 innings with 35 holds in two seasons with the Marlins. Bass will make his second stint in Toronto, as the Blue Jays first claimed the right off waivers in 2019. He signed a one-year deal to avoid arbitration as he appeared in 26 games.

Furthermore, he compiled a 2-3 record with 21 strikeouts and a 3.51 ERA in 25 2/3 innings pitched. Bass will not be a threat to Jordan Romano’s role as Toronto’s close. Nevertheless, Bass should provide an upgrade over the team’s existing options for the set-up man. He’s also more than just a rental piece; his contract is $3 million for 2023.

For Zach Pop, it’s a homecoming for the reliever. The 25-year-old is from Brampton, Ontario, an hour away from Toronto. Pop has been a solid option for the Marlins like his teammate Bass. He posted a 3.60 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 14 strikeouts in 20 innings.

Jordan Groshans was the Blue Jays’ first-round pick in 2018. He was the No. 4 prospect in the Blue Jays’ farm system. However, his path to the majors was slow, thanks to the incumbent Bo Bichette. Groshans has a career .283/.362/402 slash line in the minor leagues. Altogether, he has one home run, eight doubles, 24 RBI and 30 runs scored.
