Deven Marrero Takes Centre Stage as The Marlins Return Fire at The Padres

July 28, 2021 by Fish Stripes Leave a Comment

The latest news, odds and free MLB picks cannot go without an honorary mention for Deven Marrero and Lewis Brinson—they were key players in the Marlins levelling their series versus the San Diego Padres this past weekend.

Yu Darvish of the San Diego Padres delivered a fastpitch in the upper corner of the strike zone, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Deven Marrero from claiming a big hit. As he watched the ball sail towards the right field at loanDepot park, it was his first start for his hometown team at his hometown ballpark in 23 months, and yes, it cleared the wall for a solo home run.

Marrero’s 356-foot home run triggered a domino effect for Miami’s offence as the Marlins defeated the San Diego Padres (9-3), splitting a four-game series and saving face. It was the hometown heroes first home run since 2017 and his first big hit for Miami since his debut.

“I was just trying to see him up in the zone and shoot it the other way,” Marrero said. “He left one up, and it went out, somehow.”

Marrero became the 38th player in Marlins history who’s first hit at the team was a home run and the third to do it this season, alongside Joe Panik and Adam Duvall.

Marrero is a Plantation American Heritage alumnus with 165 games played in the MLB spanning over six seasons. This weekend saw him tie his career-high with three hits with an additional three runs and a stolen base. In the fifth inning, Marrero scored the Marlins leading run after reaching an infield single, got to second in wait for Magneuris Sierra RBI double, which gained him a score.

The Lewis Brinson Run Continues

Outfielder Lewis Brinson was recalled to the active roster on July 19th and has since made a hit in all five games where he’s featured on the plate. Now hitting a .357 with two doubles, one home run, three RBI’s and two runs scored, Brinson is proving his worth on the starting line-up.

“A lot of confidence right now, honestly,” Brinson told the press. “You know, just the work I’ve been putting in. I’m trusting myself and trusting my work. I just take It into the game, not to put too much pressure on myself to try to hit that three-run home, but just to go out there and do it. I’m able to do that right now, so you keep this going. I’m going to keep this confidence going and keep the work going, too.”

Hello Sandy Alcantara

This Sunday saw the return of starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara as the Marlins activated him from the bereavement list. He will be starting as Miami begins their two-game road series versus the Baltimore Orioles.

The return of Alcantara sees a reliable staff member to Marlin’s pitching rotation. With Trevor Rodgers and Pablo Lopez side-lined, Miami has suffered in this department, which should ease his return. Their previous nine matchups have all included a rookie starter or a bullpen feature.

Alcantara has a 3.23 ERA, 105 strikeouts, and a .233 batting average against within 20 starts this season.

Marlins Highs and Lows

Starling Marte owns a .303 batting average this term, following his three-hit outing this past Sunday. In addition, he stole two bases that tied him for the third-most in MLB—with a total of 21.

Miami Marlins have now scored a minimum of nine runs on eleven occasions throughout the 2021 season and are 13-0 in matchups where they managed to score at least eight runs.
