Marliniversary: Marlins use error to score two in ninth, stun Mets

Winning in your last at-bat is always thrilling. On this day 10 years ago, the Florida Marlins did just that with the help of a miscue.

A throwing error by the second baseman was the difference at Citi Field on Aug. 2, 2011. The Marlins pushed across two runs in the ninth to stun the New York Mets, 4-3.

The Marlins trailed 3-2 heading to the top of the ninth as New York went to closer Jason Isringhausen. The right-hander immediately ran into trouble.

After walking Logan Morrison on five pitches, Isringhausen got Giancarlo Stanton (then called Mike) to pop out. That however was followed by a sharp single from Mike Cameron that allowed Morrison to reach third. The next pitch hit Florida catcher John Buck and just like that, the bases were loaded with one out.

With the pitcher’s spot due up, the Marlins turned to pinch hitter Bryan Petersen. The Mets needed a double play to end the game when Petersen hit a slow roller to second base.

With the ball heading toward infielder Justin Turner, Buck stopped to avoid being tagged out. That was enough of a distraction as Turner’s throw went high and wide past the first baseman, allowing both Morrison and Cameron to score and give the Marlins the lead.

Isringhausen got out of the inning with no further damage, but the damage was done. After Randy Choate walked Ronny Paulino to start the bottom of the ninth, closer Juan Carlos Oviedo (then known as Leo Núñez) induced a double play off the bat of Daniel Murphy before striking out Jason Pridie to end the game.

Prior to the ninth, both runs for the Marlins came on solo home runs by second baseman Omar Infante, who had just one homer entering the contest. It was a miscue by the Mets’ second baseman that ultimately decided the contest on this day a decade ago.
