Marlins Pitchers Boasting Quality ERAs to Begin the Season

April 26, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Despite mounting injuries to the Miami Marlins rotation, various starting pitchers have stepped up and led the staff so far this season. To add to the woes, top-of-the-rotation starter Jesús Luzardo simply has not been the same as last season. Despite these obvious blows, there are still certain Marlins pitchers who have looked promising and hold an ERA lower than 4.50.

A quality starter has an ERA of 4.50 or lower. Here’s the Marlins starters in that bucket;

Max Meyer
Ryan Weathers
Edward Cabrera
Trevor Rogers
Roddery Muñoz

Even though they’re missing Sandy and Eury + Luzardo having a slow start – the pitching is still QUALITY

Marlins Pitchers Boasting an ERA of Lower Than 4.50

Max Meyer

Max Meyer is in his first season back since Tommy John surgery. In his three games with the Marlins this season, the 25-year-old prospect has a  2-0 record with a 2.12 ERA and a 0.824 WHIP in 17 innings pitched. In one of his appearances, he faced the loaded Atlanta Braves offense and went six full innings, striking out seven and allowing only one run on six hits. He is showing signs of being a consistent pitcher for the Marlins to fall back on. After his two wins the Marlins inexplicably optioned him to the minors. When asked, manager Skip Schumaker had this to say:

Manager Skip Schumaker on the Marlins optioning RHP Max Meyer today:

– He will be pitching in Triple-A; Once a week/ 3 innings kind of thing
– Would like Max to develop that 2-seamer to compliment the rest of his pitches pic.twitter.com/QL6vqqdTkA

Ryan Weathers

So far in 2024, the 24-year-old Ryan Weathers has pitched in five games and has a 2-2 record. He has a 3.16 ERA with a 1.403 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings. His most recent start came against the Braves where he went 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs with only one strikeout. His best start would come against the red-hot New York Yankees, and he would go five scoreless innings with one strikeout.

Edward Cabrera

Edward Cabrera began the 2024 season on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement, the same injury that got him sidelined in 2023. In his first start back, he faced the San Francisco Giants and went six innings, only allowing one run and 10 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Marlins would not win that game due to their dormant offense. So far in two games he has a 3.27 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 11 innings. Hopefully, he can be another valuable addition to the Marlins rotation, which they are in dire need of.

Trevor Rogers

Although Trevor Rogers has a 0-3 record, he has had five quality starts that just could not be backed up by the Marlins offense. In his five starts, he has a 4.10 ERA, a 1.519 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings pitched. His best outing came against the Giants where he went 5 2/3 innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts. Hopefully he can uphold this low ERA and become a reliable starter for the Marlins.

In his major league debut, Roddery Muñoz went five innings and only allowed two runs with seven strikeouts. That’s good for a 3.60 ERA. He impressed many and looks to be a young talent the Marlins need.
