Marlins Sign Free Agent Right-Hander to Minor League Deal

July 10, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Miami Marlins have added to their pitching depth by signing right-hander Adam Oller to a minor league deal. Oller signed a minor league deal with the Cleveland Guardians in the offseason but was released last week. Before his release, the 29-year-old right-hander pitched 27 ⅔ innings for Triple-A Columbus, making six starts and six relief appearances. His 7.48 ERA paired with his 14.4% walk rate ultimately led the Guardians to let him go.

Marlins Boost Pitching Depth, Signing Adam Oller to Minor League Deal

The Marlins pitching staff has been decimated by injuries this year. Starters Braxton Garrett, Eury Pérez, and Jesús Luzardo are all on the injured list, while ace Sandy Alcántara is out for the season. With Miami expected to be deadline sellers, Adam Oller, who will presumably report to Triple-A Jacksonville, could eventually get another big-league opportunity.

Oller was with the Oakland Athletics for a while, coming over from the New York Mets in the Chris Bassitt trade in 2022. He pitched 94 innings for Oakland, posting a 7.09 ERA, 13.5% strikeout rate, and 11.6% walk rate. The right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners last July. He stayed on optional assignment before being outrighted at season’s end. Despite his rough numbers, Oller punched out 26.4% of batters faced in a swing role for Triple-A Columbus. Going back to 2021, Oller has struck out 25.2% of batters faced in 293 ⅔ minor league innings.

For the time being, Oller will serve as a depth piece for the Marlins who can fill innings if needed. But with the Marlins expected to trade several arms at the deadline, he could crack Miami’s roster. Oller could be a long-term piece for the Fish if he can improve his command and carry his punchout powers to the majors. The 29-year-old has less than a year of big-league service time and still has one option season remaining.
