NYY 4, MIA 2; Marlins drop third straight

Trevor Rogers came off the injured list, but wasn’t at his best.

The Miami Marlins lost 4-2 in a close ballgame against the New York Yankees, their third straight loss overall. The Marlins offense continues to struggle as they only scored two runs on four hits.

The Fish had their All-Star left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers got the start Saturday night as he was recently activated off the 10-day IL due to lower back spasms. Taking the mound in front of the largest LoanDepot Park crowd of 2021, Rogers wasn’t at his best. The southpaw pitched 3 ²⁄₃ innings allowing five hits, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

Relief pitcher David Hess came in the top of the fourth with two outs and two runners on but was able to blow a 94 mph fastball by Aaron Judge to end the threat. Hess didn’t last much longer as he only threw one inning allowing one hit, one run, two walks and two strikeouts.

Hess was relieved by Anthony Bender who was able to strikeout Gio Urshela to end the top of the fifth. Bender was relieved by right-handed pitcher Zach Pop.

The former Rule 5 Draft pick pitched only one inning but was able to retire the side including a strikeout versus Judge.

Pop was replaced by left-handed pitcher Steven Okert. The former San Francisco Giant did give up a mammoth bomb against Anthony Rizzo but settled down after that. He pitched two innings allowing one hit, one run, no walks and two strikeouts.

Okert was relieved by Anthony Bass as he would only pitched in the top of the ninth. Bass allowed a two-out walk to Rizzo but was able to get Brett Gardner to fly out to LF to end the inning.

At the plate, the Marlins continue to do nothing as they struggled to hit against New York’s pitching staff. Jorge Alfaro went 1-for-3 with a RBI triple and walk. He also scored on a wild pitch to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Miguel Rojas went 1-for-3 with a single into RF and also picked up his ninth stolen base of the season. Lewis Brinson went 1-for-3 with a double into right center. Brian Anderson went 1-for-4 with a single in the ninth. Anderson has gotten a hit in every game he’s played since returning from the IL.

What’s next?

The Miami Marlins have not named who their starter will be in the series finale. Left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery will get the start for the Yankees on Sunday. Montgomery has a 4-5 record with a 3.78 ERA and 110 strikeouts in twenty starts. First pitch is at 1:10 pm EST.
