MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A 15-year-old is dead, a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy and firefighter are in the hospital after possibly being exposed to some sort of chemical in West Park.

“Is there anything inside the house he may have been exposed to?” asked CBS4’s Austin Carter.

“No, no, nothing, nothing,” responded Jacques Monfiston.

The uncle of Lorvens Julien tells CBS 4 News that he has no clue what happened to his nephew, and right now the Broward County Sheriff’s Office has more questions than answers.

“Why did this child die?” asks Veda Coleman-Wright, Broward County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer.

According to BSO, the teen died after possibly being exposed to a chemical inside his home Wednesday morning in West Park.

Family members shared a picture of the teenager.

“Very, very sad what this family is going through they are talking with our investigators, and I can tell you our folks are trying their best to determine what happened,” said Coleman-Wright.

Exactly what happened is still unclear.

The boy was pronounced dead at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where something strange caught the staff’s attention.

“The doctors there were also concerned that there was a strange odor coming from the victim possibly of gas,” said Coleman-Wright.

When BSO deputies and firefighters got to the home along SW 24th St. to look for other possible victims, one of the deputies complained of having trouble breathing.

Then, a firefighter suffered second-degree burns after being exposed to an unknown chemical inside.

Both were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

“They are expected to be released today, which is good news,” says Coleman-Wright.

For much of the day, crews could be seen in full hazmat gear as they were not sure what they were dealing with.

“They are running tests taking samples analyzing what they’ve been able to gather,” says Coleman-Wright.

From a view high above in Chopper4, steel drums could be seen in the backyard of the home.

“They use those drums to transport products back and forth from here to Haiti,” says Coleman-Wright.

The Sheriff’s Office says they’re not sure if they have something to do with what happened, but do not want to rule anything out.

The 15-year-old who died also went to the hospital on Tuesday, a day before he died.

Investigators are trying to figure out if that has anything to do with his death.
